Pick Up Some New Picture Framing Ideas
Sep 5th, 2010 by MedalBox101

Mat (picture framing)

In the picture framing world, a mat is a flat piece of thin paper-based material included in a picture frame. It serves as extra decoration and performs many other practical functions. For ex- separates the art from the glass. And putting mats in a frame is known as matting.

Uses of a Mat

In picture framing, a mat has various important uses or functions. Its most important function is that it separates the art from the glass; this is important as if they are not separated then it may results in water damage, mildew or mold. Photographs should also be separated from the glass because the surface of photographs may damage easily and separate from its original paper and stick to the glass if wet.

Fillet (picture framing)

In the picture framing world, a fillet, also known as a slip is a small piece of moulding that fits in between matting or inside a larger frame for decorative purposes. The term “picture framing” is related to the engineering term. Unlike the use of fillets in mechanical engineering, the use of fillets in picture frames is completely decorative.

Fillets are made up of hard or soft wood and feature a flat “lip” that can fit underneath a mat. They are constructed similarly to picture frames except for their size and shape. They are made usually from polystyrene or wood and are available in various styles and finishes, including silver and gold leafed finishes.

Uses of a Fillet

The fillet is used as decoration in the lining of a picture frame or underneath a mat inside one. It is used to draw the eye inwards to the document being framed.

You can also use inverted fillets as a form of picture frame on flat, small objects. In this, the card was glued to the lip of the inverted fillets. This type of objects that have been framed by using inverted fillets can be backed and then affixed to wire to hang out, to display on an easel, or to use inside of a big shadow box display. It should be noticed that only very small flat objects can be framed by using only inverted fillets.

Shadow Boxes?
Sep 2nd, 2010 by MedalBox101

I had NO ideas on what to get my boyfriend for christmas..so i was thinking.

He has tons of track medals (the ones on the ribbons!) they’re really nice, but they’re just stacked on top of each other hanging on his dresser. I was thinking of getting a shadow box (or 2) made so he can display them. First of all, i was wondering if anyone thinks this is a good idea. Second, where do you go to get a shadow box made? a framing shop? Thanks for the help!
